Micah kissed his daughter on the cheek, laid her carefully in the crib and whispered, “Goodnight, babygirl,” then walked out of her room as Georgiana was saying her goodnights.

Georgiana left a crack in Ruby’s door, not seeing Micah anywhere when she stepped into the hallway. She was surprised to discover him in their bedroom (more like her bedroom) unbuttoning his shirt.

Determined not to be distracted by his chocolate, toned, cast-iron pectorals, she said, “As I was saying, I need to know what’s going on here?”

“Explain.”

“You know what I mean, Micah. We’re married. I’ve been trying my hardest to be a good wife to you, but you’re not making an effort to be anything to me.”

“What am I supposed to be for you, Georgiana?”

“A husband for starters.”

“We agreed to get married for Ruby’s sake. My being an actual husband to you was never a part of the plan.”

“Right, because you’re still hoping you’ll somehow magically get back together with your ex-wife who’s moved on with her life, by the way.”

“Don’t speak on things you don’t know anything about.”

“I know you still want her. Am I right? Isn’t that what this is all about?”

“I don’t know what more you want from me, Georgiana. I married you. I moved you into my house. We agreed we’d raise our daughter together. What more do you want?”

“Wow,” she said near tears. “How about a man who actually makes an attempt to show me the same love I show him? I do so much for us and this family—”

“And I don’t? I take care of Ruby—”

“As you should. She’s your daughter, but what about me, Micah? I need a husband. Do you not want this to work long-term, because if that’s the case, I need to know now?”

“I want us to do what we have to do for Ruby.”

“So, there is no ‘us’ meaning you don’t want an actual relationship with me. Is that how I’m to understand what you’re saying?”

Micah threaded his hands behind his head and paced the area beside the bed before responding, “What do you think I have to offer you, Georgiana? You’re a decent, hardworking woman. What could I possibly offer you and why—why would you want someone like me? Do you not know who I am? I’m a man who cheated on his wife and got another woman pregnant—you—and you want me to believe I’m the man you want? Save yourself the trouble, sweetheart. You can do so much better,” he told her and then walked into the bathroom.

Georgiana frowned, furious. She wasn’t about to accept that. Every time they got into a heated discussion, he ran off. Well, this is where it stopped. Nothing would ever be resolved if they couldn’t see the discussion, argument or whatever it was all the way through.

She walked to the bathroom door and twisted the knob. The door was locked so she banged hard with her fist. “Micah, I wasn’t done talking. Can you open the door, please?”

She waited, heard the water running at the sink – not the shower – so she knew he heard her.
